Justice McClellan to host roundtable on Working With Children Checks
The Chair of the Royal Commission The Hon Justice Peter McClellan AM, together with Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald AM, will host a roundtable in Canberra to discuss Working With Children Checks on Monday 16 June 2014.
Justice McClellan said the purpose of the round-table is to assist the Royal Commission to better understand how Working With Children Checks, or similar processes, can prevent child sexual abuse in institutional contexts.
“The discussion will also focus on how to improve approaches to pre-employment screening and implementations across jurisdictions.
“Roundtables form an important part of the work of the Royal Commission. They provide an opportunity for the Royal Commission to hear from experts with different perspectives, expertise and experience to consider what institutions and government should do better to protect children against child sexual abuse.
“The participants in this roundtable bring with them unique expertise that is relevant to the Royal Commission’s research in the area of Working With Children Checks. They include state and territory government representatives, Children’s Commissioners and other relevant service providers.”
A public viewing gallery will be open to members of the public and the media.
